Mogarraz: A Charming Village with Faces on its Facades

Place Description

Mogarraz is a small and charming village located in the Sierra de Francia, in the province of Salamanca, Spain. This picturesque place is famous for its houses of traditional mountain architecture, with wooden and stone facades, and narrow, cobbled streets that transport visitors to another era.

What makes Mogarraz unique are the more than 300 portraits that adorn the facades of the houses. These works of art are part of the "Aqvo et Spiritus" project by local artist Florencio Maíllo, who painted the portraits of the villagers from photographs taken in 1967 for the identity card. Each portrait is placed on the house where the person portrayed lived, creating an open-air museum that pays tribute to the inhabitants of Mogarraz.

Among them, the Route of the Roots stands out, a trail that follows ancient muleteer paths and passes by centuries-old chestnut trees.
